Sink or Float?
Last Friday, we were up again for another science adventure as we discussed the basic concept of density by simply observing which object sinks or floats in water.
We started off by making the kids guess which object will sink or float. As we put a plastic spoon on the basin filled with water, some kids said, “Sink! Sink!” while the other said, “Float! Float!” To make it further interesting, we put a metal spoon in the basin to make a clear comparison of the differences in the properties of the spoons. Then there goes the big question–why? The kinders were very clever to figure out that the difference in the weight of the spoon plays a major part in its sinking and floating in water.
Still, we have more questions left to answer. What if we put the egg with the same weight in saltwater and in tap water? At which solution will the egg sink or float? Again, everyone made their guesses. The kinders’ eyes popped when they saw the egg floating in saltwater and sinking in tapwater. The kinders exclaimed, “Eh! Why?” Then another kid answered, “I know! It’s salt right?”
It’s amazing how science can spark the curiosity of our kinders. I wonder what our next science adventure would be?
